Gwen Rakotovao

Artistic Director

Gwen Rakotovao, a choreographer and dancer, is an Associate Artist at SoaZara Arts et Partage, founded by the poet and writer Raharimanana. Now based in Europe after working for a decade in the United States, she is the laureate of the 2012 International Contemporary Dance Competition in Biarritz and holds a degree in Arts du spectacle in Dance from the University of Paris 8 and a Master’s in Performance Studies from New York University.

 

Her dance career spans three continents: Europe, America, and Africa. In France, she has had the privilege of working with international choreographers such as Qudus Onikeku and Mehdi Farajpour. In New York, she has participated in dance projects and performed for artists including Mayfield Brooks, yonTonde (Whitney V Hunter), HT Chen, Lori Waxman, and Regina Nejman. As a choreographer, she develops a diasporic and contemporary dance vocabulary, and her solos have toured internationally, covering four continents and fifteen countries, including the African Dance Biennale in Marrakech – On Marche. Her artistic creations and research delve into subjects such as rituals and movements of resistance.
